The aircraft’s history:
Built in 1967, this Lockheed Hercules airframe, construction number 4222, began its operational life with American cargo operator Airlift International, registered as N9254R. It subsequently served with Saturn Airways and Alaska International Air before moving to Angola in the late 1970s.
The aircraft later operated with CTA Angola and TAAG Angola Airlines, carrying the registration D2-THB, before joining Angola Air Charter by January 1990.
Its history came to a dramatic end on 5 January 1990 during a cargo operation at Menongue, Angola. Historical accident records report that the aircraft was struck by a surface-to-air missile shortly after take-off. The crew managed to return to the airport, but the aircraft overran the runway and was destroyed. All seven people on board survived with minor injuries.
The aircraft was subsequently recorded as written off, making surviving original material from this airframe a particularly unusual find for aviation history enthusiasts.
